2013 Single-Vineyard Cabernet Vintage Report

2013 Single-Vineyard Cabernet Vintage Report

In my 23 years as a winemaker, I have never produced Single-Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons with as much color and power as the 2013 Nickel & Nickel lineup delivers. Winemaker Darice Spinelli

Although our wine club members had early access to these powerful wines, we are beyond excited to announce the official release of our 2013 Nickel and Nickel Single Vineyard Cabernet Collection. Some of the wines feel like velvet, while others possess a full-bodied hillside intensity. They're rich, expressive and drinking beautifully now. At the same time, if you're looking for a vintage to cellar this is it.

In terms of the growing season, the conditions were near-perfect. The weather mirrored 2012 in many ways, with warm days and cool, foggy nights offering ideal conditions for fruit and tannin to ripen in tandem. Of course, when you're farming 15 Single-Vineyard Cabernet sites in a single year, no two vineyards ever develop at exactly the same rate. This is especially true when some of those sites stretch across alluvial benchlands on the Napa Valley floor while others are planted in high-elevation mountain terrain. We made smart farming decisions at just the right time, from when to prune to when to make our very first and last picks.

Even if we hadn't made such focused efforts in the vineyards and winery, we have no doubt that the 2013 vintage of Nickel & Nickel Single-Vineyard Cabernets would have been extraordinary. Although each wine developed in its own time and way, they all showed a deep, concentrated fruit maturity unlike anything we'd seen before.

As Winemaker Darice Spinelli says, All of these wines are age-worthy and will improve in the bottle. So pull the cork on one tonight but don't forget to lay a few down for five, 10, even 20 years. My cellar will be stocked with them, too!

If you are new to Nickel & Nickel or simply aren't sure where to start, we invite you to explore the sensory notes and vintage descriptions of the following wines. They were three favorites during this year's annual Cabernet Day Celebration, one of our most anticipated wine club member events:

2013 Nickel & Nickel John C. Sullenger Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, Napa Valley. Rich and coating, with a juicy, focused fruit finish.

2013 Nickel & Nickel Copper Streak Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Stags Leap District, Napa Valley. Smooth and plush, with beautiful depth of flavor.

2013 Nickel & Nickel Beatty Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell Mountain, Napa Valley. Ripe and exotic, with an expansive mouthfeel and coating tannins.
